Marathon De Sables
Marathon des Sables (Sand Marathon). The Sand Marathon is possibly the toughest, hardest and most strenuous athletic event ever held. It comprises of a 151 mile, 6 day race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco. It is run over 6 legs, all of varying distances (25, 34, 38, 82, 42, 22 km).
Although you are running with backup from the race organisers there are strict rules. Two camels set off last, and if they pass you, you’re out. If you need to take an IV drip to rehydrate, you suffer a time penalty, so don’t think it’s as easy as your local marathon.
The hardest stage by far is the 82 km stage on day four. Mainly because straight after on the next day you have a full marathon to run; so give yourself plenty of time to finish it, most people do.. ie more than half! Although you do have a rest day after the longest stage, most people use this to run the stage as it can take that long!
Although the race looks a killer (and it is!), you can train for it in 6 months. Start running with a 10kg backpack for about 30-35 miles a week and build it up to around 60-70 miles a week. It’s very important though that you are mentally prepared as well as it can be even more of a killer if you aren’t determined.
The race usually begins at the end of March, and costs around £2500. The race’s website is http://www.saharamarathon.co.uk.
