The Great north Run.

What an event! With 54,000 runners this is a fantastic event. It started in 1981 with less than 5000 runners, but has grown and grown to become one of the most important races in our diaries.

The route weaves through Newcastle and Gateshead and finishes on the sea front at South Shields. There is easy transport back to mainlaine station and airport via the Newcastle Metro.

When: End of September (2011 will be 18th September)

Distance: 13.1 miles

Runners: around 55,000

Profile: Road race which drops slightly over full length, but with a couple of hills after 7 miles.

Water Stations: Plenty

How to enter: Register for Ballot

Many charity entries. The event is well supported and medical and physio services available along route and at the end. The city pretty much comes to a stand still while this huge event is on.
