compression Tights - How Do they work?
Whilst they sound rather uncomfortable, running compression tights reputedly improve performance. Compression tights mould to the users body and promote blood circulation and improve oxygen flow round the body. This helps reduce lactic acid build up. The materials they are made of are also designed to draw sweat away from the body. All of this helps improve performance.
Much of the benefit of compression tights is often attributed to a reduction in muscle oscillation. The tightness of the shorts or tights either across the whole garment of through banding in the material reduce excess muscle movement and therefore energy expended. However, compression tights are often worn after exercise to speed up recovery by offering all the same benefits, esp blood flow.
The level of compression offered can vary from garment to garment. 15-20mmHg or 20-30mmHg are quite common ranges found in sports wear. Compression socks are often prescribed by doctors for various medical reasons, and of course flight socks are using the same principle.
So do compression shorts or compression tights work? Well you’d need to try them for yourself, but the science seems good and already in use in the medical profession.
